Closseum, Rome Italy

Husband took photo from the top floor

Husband and I had a vocation last year in Italy and, of course, we did not forget to visit the most famous monument in Ancient Rome, one 7 wonders of the world in Roman the Colosseum (70 - 82 A.D.) Rome, Italy. This is the the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering.

The Colosseum is so huged and with the accomodations for 60,000 seated and 10,000 standing, all of whom could enter and leave in a matter of minutes, courtesy of 80 entrances.
The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.
The area in which performances took place was a wooden floor covered with sand. The Latin word for sand is harena, and this gave us the word "arena". It measures 83 m by 48 m. Below the arena is a maze of underground passageways called hypogeum (Latin for "underground"). It has two levels of subterranean tunnels and cages for the performers and beasts to wait before entering the arena. An underground passage leads to the Ludus Magnus, the training school for gladiators, which also has an arena for training the gladiators.

When we were there, there are bunch of tourist and extreme heat, and we waited in line 45 minutes. I thanks that was no so long because on that time was quite cold for me and I had just 1 jacket and not so thick.
It is great experienced to visit in this great and amusement building of Roman Empire.
